Power plants generate electricity by using one of several practices. Two recurring elements here are gas and steam. Both demand different mechanisms and operating conditions to maximise performance. In this post, we will be detailing steam and gas turbines, and the differences with them. Steam turbines

The main difference between the turbines is that one gets power from expanding steam. Fuels like natural gas can heat water in a boiler. In some cases you can also use renewable thermal energy for the heating. The heated water evaporates into steam. This then rotates turbine blades to generate power.

One of the major differences here is the interior temperature. With steam, it only reaches 500 to 650ºC. This is less than half the temperature of gas turbine reactions.

The Rankine Cycle is the name for this water-based cycle. As opposed to gas turbines, steam ones lack combustion systems and air compressors. Instead, there is a boiler and rotors capable of changing thermal energy into mechanical. Also, there is a casing area. It guarantees that the steam meets the blades under pressure.

Gas turbines

These get their power from combustion reactors. Fossil fuels mix with compressed air and burn to create very hot exhaust gases. These then come into contact with the turbine blades, revolving them to create electricity. The energy-creation cycle here is called the Joule or Brayton Cycle.

Air that is taken into the gas turbine for combustion can produce a great deal of noise. Facility managers are able to reduce it by using inlet industrial silencers. On the way out, exhaust gases create noise too. Luckily, exhaust silencers can handle it if you have the right design.

As we said above, the temperature here is much higher than with steam. Because of the combustion reaction, exhaust gases can be as hot as 1,500ºC. There is a benefit to using these over steam turbines though. Since water isn’t integral to the procedure, there is no danger of a shutdown because of internal freezing.
