Three main types of blowers

Many industries rely on air blowers. They are essential for various processes, including removing dust and contaminants, tackling moisture, and supplying air for combustion. From chemical processing to electronics manufacturing, food and drink to cleaning, they are vital. However, they can generate a lot of noise. You may need to choose silencers to address the sound. Ventx can help, designing a blow off silencer or any other model to reduce the noise.

Three types

One thing to note is there are three broad types of air blowers. It is important to consider them when looking to design an effective silencing solution.

Regenerative

This type of blower is very popular because they tend to be very compact. Don’t let the size fool you though; they can provide low pressure, medium air flow. The large volume of air can be sufficient for lots of applications.

One thing to keep in mind here is how regenerative blowers work. They use “non-positive displacement”. It means they don’t trap air. An impeller rotates to pull in air. It pressurises within the housing. A second set of blades then discharge it.

If you are looking for a compact blower that won’t need much maintenance, a regenerative model could be perfect for you. They are far more cost effective to run than air compressors too.

Positive Displacement (rotary air blowers)

These blowers differ from regenerative models because they do trap air. They have rotors that rotate in opposing directions. This draws air into a chamber within the blower. The air pressure increases in the chamber as air flows in. It then exits through an outlet.

Positive displacement blowers are high pressure, low flow. Most importantly, they can ensure a consistent operating flow. If applications need consistency and reliability, this is the best option. Additionally, they can have very low operating costs thanks to the low energy consumption.

Centrifugal

The third type of blower has a similarity to regenerative models because they also use impellers. However, the arrangement is different. Here they draw air into the centre. The centrifugal force makes the air move, sending it to the outlet.

An interesting thing here is centrifugal blowers can offer varying output. It varies with the pressure. They can have a low air flow, but create high velocity at the outlet. This also ensures they are cost effective to run.
