Industrial noise pollution is an issue that can lead to all sorts of problems. Many of them affect us directly. Crucially, loud noises can harm hearing, lead to stress, and cause other health complications. There is also an impact on the environment, something that can harm us too. Luckily, we can offer a solution in the form of our silencers. These are high quality installations that reduce the noise levels. Our designs include the blow down silencer as well as many more, ensuring we can cater for various needs.
Boiler blowdowns are a crucial part of the operation. It’s up to the blowdown to remove impurities to preserve the water chemistry. If you don’t remove them, such impurities can cause the deterioration of valves. It’s the same for piping and similar components. Said components are necessary for safe boiler control and operation. So, issues with them can cause problems like leaks and breakdowns. You want to avoid these to ensure consistency and safety.
What we want to do here is discuss the finer details of certain boiler blowdown systems. It is a good idea to think about them and how you can potentially have noise issues because of them.
Blowdown tank
A tank like this is a vessel that gathers and stores blowdown water. From here, cooling can happen over time through the vessel wall. After there has been enough cooling, you could drain the tank through a valve. Or, you can remove the water via a pump. The resulting flash steam tends to lower the incoming water pressure to atmospheric pressure. Afterwards, the flash steam gets vented to the atmosphere. This venting can generate noise, so you may need a blow down silencer.
As blowdown water gets into the tank, it’s reduced to atmospheric pressure straight away. The flash steam typically vents into the atmosphere. As for the remaining water, it cools through natural convection. Now that you have cooler water in the tank, subsequent blowdown water that isn’t flashed into steam merges with it. It then cools to an equilibrium state. When the tank gets to the high level set point, it requires draining as per the operating instructions.
Heat recovery system
This is a general title that describes a device or system that recovers heat energy from a specific process instead of wasting it. You can find them in various HVAC systems and industrial processes.
A blowdown heat recovery system is really useful. It can have a massive impact on energy consumption, efficiency, and the carbon footprint. It makes use of the blowdown’s available heat to preheat the feed supplies before entering the boiler. Normally, this happens in the deaerator using the flash steam in the blowdown vessel. Alternatively, the heat recovered can be moved to another process medium entirely.
Talk to us about the advantages of a blow down silencer
At Ventx, we have provided silencers to an impressive list of clients. Thanks to us, they’ve been able to keep their noise at reasonable levels. This keeps workers safe, reduces the impact on the wider public, and also helps protect the environment.
So, if you find that a boiler is generating too much noise, a blow down silencer could be what you need. Please get in touch and we’ll look into it with you, offering our professional advice.
