In-line silencers use the same principle of acoustic design as a vent silencer. When it comes to in-line noise, you have to consider reducing the vibration caused by the valve noise. The reason for this is that noise is basically air born vibration.
There are two types of silencer for in-line applications;
- Control Valve Silencers use a design to provide a pressure drop or back pressure. They primarily see use in conjunction with a control valve. A combination of diffuser design and an absorptive section achieves the attenuation.
- Direct In-Line Silencers use a design to produce as little pressure loss as possible. But, they achieve the required attenuation using only an absorptive section.

Noise attenuation measures often focus on noise from exhaust and venting devices. This is the case in a lot of any industrial processes. Whenever a flow of gas passes through a chamber or junction, there is the potential for flow disruption. This is also the case just when it goes from one diameter of pipe to another. This results in unwanted noise. This noise is sometimes amplified by the downstream piping. Fitting an in line silencer at such a point in the system balances the flow. This will end such noise at the source.

This acoustic core can be supplied in a custom fabricated in line silencer housing. Or, there is the option of as-is so that you can insert it into your existing pipework. A good acoustic match will mean acoustic cladding of pipework is unnecessary.
